Coccidiosis control without anticoccidial drugs is one of the greatest challenges in antibiotic-free poultry production. The Challenge
Anticoccidial drugs (ionophores like monensin, salinomycin; chemicals like diclazuril, toltrazuril) have been the foundation of coccidiosis control for decades. Without them, coccidiosis lesions increase, and the risk of clinical outbreaks rises significantly.
The challenge is managing coccidiosis at a subclinical level where the bird develops immunity without suffering significant performance losses.
Coccidiosis Vaccination
Vaccination is the most effective drug-free approach. Coccidiosis vaccines introduce controlled numbers of the parasite to stimulate immunity. The trade-off is that vaccinated flocks typically have 1-3 points higher FCR during the first 2-3 weeks while immunity develops.
Nutritional support for vaccinated flocks:
- Higher vitamin A (15,000-20,000 IU/kg) during the first 2 weeks supports gut immunity
- Vitamin E at 80-100 IU/kg supports the immune response
- Probiotics help stabilize the gut microbiome during the vaccine reaction period

Nutritional Support During Vaccine Reaction
The vaccine reaction (7-14 days post-vaccination) is the critical period. Birds may show mild diarrhea and reduced performance. Supportive nutrition includes:

Natural Anticoccidial Compounds

Tannins from chestnut or grape extract bind to Eimeria proteins and inhibit invasion. At 500-1,500 g/ton, tannins have reduced lesion scores in several trials.
Essential oils (oregano, thyme, cinnamon) at 200-500 g/ton have mild anticoccidial activity. The carvacrol and thymol in oregano oil disrupt Eimeria cell membranes.
Curcumin from turmeric at 200-500 g/ton has anti-inflammatory and mild anticoccidial effects.
None of these match the efficacy of ionophores, but they provide meaningful support in drug-free programs.

Litter Management

- Collect litter samples weekly (days 14-35)
- Count oocysts per gram of litter using a McMaster counting chamber
- Target: below 50,000 oocysts/gram; intervene above 100,000
- Adjust the program based on trends
What to Expect
Realistic expectations for drug-free coccidiosis control:
- 2-5 point FCR penalty compared to ionophore programs
- Occasional mild outbreaks requiring treatment
- Higher litter oocyst counts
- Better immunity in subsequent flocks
The best drug-free operations achieve acceptable (though not equal) performance compared to conventional programs. The difference narrows with experience. I’ve seen operations go from 5 points FCR penalty in year 1 to 2 points in year 3.
Drug-free coccidiosis control is not for every operation. It requires excellent management, careful monitoring, and acceptance of some performance reduction. But for producers targeting drug-free or antibiotic-free markets, it is achievable.
