Poultry Progesterone Supplementation for Laying Hens

Progesterone is not a nutrient in the traditional sense. It’s a hormone that plays a central role in the laying hen’s reproductive cycle. While supplementation is less common than with vitamins or minerals, there are specific situations where progesterone support can improve laying performance.

Progesterone in the Laying Hen

Progesterone controls the timing of ovulation and the onset of lay. It’s produced by the granulosa cells of the ovarian follicles. The hormone triggers the pre-ovulatory surge of luteinizing hormone that causes the follicle to release the ovum.

A normal laying hen ovulates approximately 30-60 minutes after oviposition (egg laying). The process repeats every 24-26 hours. Progesterone levels rise and fall in a predictable pattern through each cycle.

When Progesterone Supplementation May Help

While routine progesterone supplementation is not practiced in commercial egg production, there are specific scenarios where support may be beneficial:

Delayed onset of lay. Pullets that are slow to come into production sometimes respond to nutritional support of hormone synthesis.

Irregular laying cycles. Hens with gaps in their laying sequence of more than 24 hours may be experiencing suboptimal progesterone signaling.

Molting recovery. After a molt, progesterone levels need to re-establish for consistent egg production.

Nutritional Support for Progesterone Synthesis

Instead of supplementing progesterone directly (which is not practical in most feed programs), I focus on nutrients that support progesterone synthesis:

Cholesterol is the precursor molecule for all steroid hormones, including progesterone. A laying hen needs 1-2 grams of cholesterol per day for hormone production. The body synthesizes cholesterol, but adequate dietary fat supports this process.

Linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) is a precursor for the prostaglandins that work alongside progesterone in the reproductive cycle. The diet should contain 1-2% linoleic acid from sources like soybean oil or flaxseed oil.

Niacin supports the enzymes involved in steroid hormone production. At 40-50 mg/kg of feed, it supports the metabolic pathways that generate progesterone.

Zinc (80-100 ppm) is a cofactor for the enzymes in steroidogenesis. Zinc deficiency reduces progesterone production.

Vitamin E (40-60 IU/kg) protects the pituitary and ovarian tissues from oxidative damage that could impair hormone production.

Practical Application

In my practice, I’ve found that supporting the progesterone pathway through these nutrients is most effective in:

  • Early lay (22-30 weeks). The hen’s hormonal system is still establishing its rhythm. Good nutrition supports this transition.
  • Post-molt lay. The reproductive system is restarting after the molt pause.
  • Broody hens. In some cases, nutritional intervention can break broodiness by supporting normal hormone cycling.

Broodiness Management

Broodiness is a natural behavior where the hen stops laying and sits on eggs to incubate them. Progesterone levels shift during broodiness, and some producers use nutritional strategies to discourage this behavior.

My approach to managing broodiness without drugs:

  • increase calcium intake (3.5-4.0% of the diet) to discourage the body from entering the broody state
  • provide adequate protein (16-17% CP) with methionine
  • ensure 14+ hours of light per day (light suppresses broodiness)
  • remove eggs frequently to discourage the maternal drive

Commercial Products

There are commercial products marketed for “reproductive health” that include progesterone-like compounds or precursors. I’ve evaluated some of these and found mixed results. Products containing wild yam extract or other phyto-progesterones have shown modest effects in some studies. The quality of these products varies widely.

I prefer to support natural progesterone synthesis through nutritional means rather than supplementing hormones or hormone-like compounds. The nutritional approach is safer, more consistent, and avoids regulatory issues.

A Note on Synthetic Hormones

Synthetic progesterone or its analogs are not approved for use in poultry feed in most countries. Even if they were, the risk of residues in eggs makes this a terrible idea. I’ve never used synthetic hormones in poultry and I advise all producers to avoid them.

Summary

Progesterone is an essential hormone for egg production, but direct supplementation is neither practical nor recommended. Instead, support the hen’s own hormone production through adequate nutrition: cholesterol precursors from dietary fat, linoleic acid, niacin, zinc, and vitamin E. These nutrients support the endocrine system without the risks associated with hormone supplementation.
