Respiratory Disease Prevention Using Natural Supplements
Respiratory disease in poultry has multiple causes: viral infections (IBV, NDV, AI), bacterial infections (MG, MS, Ornithobacterium), and environmental factors (ammonia, dust, temperature extremes). Nutritional support can’t prevent infection, but it strengthens the respiratory tract’s defenses.
The Respiratory Defense System
The respiratory tract has several defense layers:
Physical barriers. Nasal turbinates filter large particles. Mucous membranes trap smaller particles and pathogens.
Mucociliary clearance. Cilia on respiratory epithelial cells move mucus upward, removing trapped pathogens.
Immune defenses. Antibodies, immune cells, and antimicrobial peptides in respiratory secretions.
Cough reflex. Mechanical removal of irritants and pathogens.
Nutrition supports all these defense layers.
Vitamin A for Respiratory Health
Vitamin A is the single most important nutrient for respiratory health. It maintains the integrity of the mucous membranes that line the respiratory tract.
Vitamin A deficiency causes:
- Keratinization (hardening) of respiratory epithelium
- Reduced mucus production
- Impaired ciliary function
- Increased susceptibility to infection
For respiratory health support, I maintain vitamin A at 12,000-15,000 IU/kg in all feeds and increase to 20,000-25,000 IU/kg during respiratory challenges.
Vitamin C and Respiratory Stress
While chickens synthesize vitamin C, production drops during stress. Respiratory disease is a significant stressor.
Supplemental vitamin C at 200-300 mg/liter in drinking water during respiratory outbreaks:
- Reduces respiratory inflammation
- Supports immune cell function
- Lowers corticosterone levels
- Improves antibody response to vaccination
Electrolytes for Respiratory Support
Birds with respiratory disease often develop acid-base imbalances due to labored breathing. My electrolyte support protocol for respiratory cases:

Botanicals for Respiratory Health
Several plant compounds support respiratory health:
Garlic. Allicin, the active compound in garlic, has antimicrobial activity against several respiratory pathogens, including Mycoplasma species. At 500-1,000 g/ton of dried garlic, it provides mild antimicrobial support.
Echinacea. Stimulates immune cell activity. At 500-1,000 g/ton for 5-7 days, echinacea enhances the response to respiratory infections.
Turmeric (curcumin). The anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin reduce lung tissue damage during respiratory infections. At 200-500 g/ton.
Licorice root. Has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Used at 100-300 g/ton for short periods during active infection.
Environmental Management
No supplement can overcome poor air quality. The most important factors:
- Ammonia. Keep below 10 ppm, ideally below 5 ppm. Ammonia damages respiratory epithelium within hours of exposure.
- Dust. High dust levels carry pathogens and irritate the respiratory tract. Oil spraying (soybean oil at 10-30 ml/m²) reduces dust by 50-70%.
- Humidity. 50-70% relative humidity is optimal. Too dry, and mucus membranes dry out. Too wet, and litter quality suffers.
- Temperature. Avoid rapid temperature fluctuations that stress birds.

For operations with recurrent respiratory challenges:

Respiratory health is primarily about environmental management. Supplements support the bird’s natural defenses but cannot compensate for poor ventilation, high ammonia, or other environmental problems. Fix the environment first, then use supplements to enhance the bird’s ability to cope.
