Respiratory Health Supplements for Poultry: Prevention and Support
Respiratory disease is one of the most common and economically damaging health challenges in poultry. While good ventilation and biosecurity are the primary defenses, nutritional support plays a significant supporting role. I’ve seen flocks with good genetics and management still struggle with respiratory issues because their nutritional support was inadequate.
The Respiratory Challenge
Poultry have a unique respiratory system that is highly efficient at gas exchange but also highly vulnerable to airborne pathogens. The respiratory tract is lined with mucous membranes that are the first line of defense. The health of these membranes depends on adequate nutrition.
Vitamin A: The Membrane Vitamin
Vitamin A is essential for maintaining the integrity of respiratory epithelium. A deficiency causes the mucous membranes to become dry, keratinized, and less effective at trapping and clearing pathogens.
In my experience, marginal vitamin A deficiency is more common than most producers realize. I recommend:
- Broilers: 12,000-15,000 IU/kg in starter, 10,000 IU/kg in finisher
- Layers: 12,000-15,000 IU/kg during production
- During respiratory challenge: Increase to 20,000 IU/kg for 7-10 days
Vitamin A stores in the liver can supply the bird for about 2-3 weeks if dietary levels are adequate. But during a respiratory challenge, the utilization rate increases. I’ve seen flocks on marginal vitamin A levels (8,000 IU/kg) develop more severe respiratory signs during mild challenges than flocks on adequate levels.
Vitamin C and Respiratory Stress
Vitamin C supports immune function and reduces inflammation in respiratory tissues. While birds can synthesize vitamin C, the production drops during stress. In a respiratory disease challenge, supplemental vitamin C provides demonstrable benefits.
I use vitamin C at 200-300 ppm in drinking water during respiratory outbreaks. Given through water, it’s immediately available. In feed, I use stabilized forms (ascorbyl-2-phosphate) at 100-200 g/ton.
Electrolytes for Respiratory Support
Birds with respiratory disease often have labored breathing that disrupts acid-base balance. Electrolyte supplementation helps maintain normal blood pH and supports recovery.
During respiratory disease, I use a water electrolyte supplement containing:
- Sodium bicarbonate (1-2 g/liter) to buffer alkalosis from panting
- Potassium chloride (0.5 g/liter) to replace potassium losses
- Magnesium sulfate (0.2-0.5 g/liter) to support immune function
Immune-Stimulating Botanicals
Several herbal compounds have been studied for respiratory support in poultry:
Garlic (allium sativum) contains allicin, a compound with antimicrobial and immune-stimulating properties. At 200-500 g/ton of dried garlic powder, it has been shown to reduce respiratory pathogen loads. The sulfur compounds in garlic also support mucous membrane health.
Echinacea stimulates the immune system and has been shown to reduce the severity of respiratory infections. At 500-1,000 g/ton for 5-7 days during respiratory challenge, echinacea can reduce recovery time.
Turmeric (curcumin) has anti-inflammatory effects that can reduce lung tissue damage during respiratory infections. At 200-500 g/ton, it reduces inflammation without suppressing the immune response.
Licorice root contains glycyrrhizin, which has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Used at 100-300 g/ton for short periods (3-5 days) during outbreaks.
I use botanicals as supportive treatments alongside standard veterinary care, not as replacements for vaccines or antibiotics when they’re needed.
Management and Nutrition Integration
The most important factor in respiratory health is air quality. No amount of supplementation can overcome poor ventilation with high ammonia levels.
Ammonia damages the respiratory epithelium and increases susceptibility to infection. The first step in respiratory health management is keeping ammonia below 10 ppm, ideally below 5 ppm.
Nutritional interventions that help:
- Litter management products (alum, sodium bisulfate) reduce ammonia production
- Yucca extract (125-250 g/ton) reduces ammonia through binding
- Dietary electrolyte balance affects ammonia production through protein metabolism

My standard protocol during respiratory disease outbreaks:

Respiratory health is best maintained through prevention, but when outbreaks occur, the right nutritional support reduces mortality and speeds recovery.
