Coccidiosis is one of the most economically significant diseases in poultry production. I’ve dealt with outbreaks that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in mortality and lost performance. While vaccination and anticoccidial drugs are the primary control methods, nutritional supplements play an important supporting role.

Understanding Coccidiosis

Coccidiosis is caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Eimeria. The parasites invade and destroy intestinal cells, causing:

  • Reduced nutrient absorption
  • Blood loss
  • Secondary bacterial infections (especially necrotic enteritis)
  • Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance
  • Mortality in severe cases

The economic impact comes not just from mortality but from the 3-5 point FCR penalty that occurs even in subclinical infections.

Nutritional Impact of Coccidiosis

During and after a coccidiosis infection, the bird’s nutritional needs change:

Reduced feed intake. Birds eat 20-40% less during acute infection. Nutrient density must increase to compensate.

Intestinal damage. Damaged intestinal cells cannot absorb nutrients efficiently. Water-soluble nutrients and minerals are particularly affected.

Blood loss. Depending on the Eimeria species, blood loss can cause iron deficiency and anemia.

Increased immune demand. The immune response requires additional nutrients, particularly vitamin A, vitamin E, zinc, and selenium.

Key Support Supplements

Vitamin A supports intestinal epithelial repair. During coccidiosis, I increase vitamin A to 15,000-20,000 IU/kg for 7-10 days. This is 50-100% above normal levels. Studies show that adequate vitamin A reduces lesion scores and improves recovery.

Vitamin E and selenium. The antioxidant combination protects intestinal cells from oxidative damage during inflammation. I use 80-100 IU/kg vitamin E and 0.3-0.4 ppm selenium during outbreaks.

Zinc. Zinc supports intestinal barrier function and cell regeneration. At 80-120 ppm, zinc reduces the severity of coccidiosis lesions in multiple studies.

Vitamin K. Helps with blood clotting. Coccidiosis causes intestinal bleeding, and vitamin K supplementation (2-5 mg/kg) can help.

Electrolytes. Diarrhea from coccidiosis depletes electrolytes. A water electrolyte solution (sodium, potassium, bicarbonate) supports hydration during outbreaks.

Betaine and Coccidiosis

Betaine is particularly interesting for coccidiosis management. The coccidia parasite creates osmotic stress in intestinal cells. Betaine acts as an osmoprotectant, helping cells maintain normal function under stress.

Multiple studies show betaine at 500-1,000 g/ton reduces coccidiosis lesion scores by 20-40%. The combination of betaine with ionophore anticoccidials shows additive effects.

I include betaine in all feeds for operations with a history of coccidiosis. The cost ($2-5/ton) is justified by the lesion score reduction alone.

Natural Anticoccidial Compounds

Several natural compounds have anticoccidial activity:

  • Vitamin E at 50-80 IU/kg (higher than standard)
  • Organic selenium at 0.3 ppm
  • Probiotic (Bacillus) for competitive exclusion
  • Mannan-oligosaccharides for pathogen binding
  • Consider natural anticoccidials during high-risk periods

The Bottom Line

Nutritional supplements cannot replace anticoccidial drugs or vaccines. But the right support program reduces the severity of infections and speeds recovery.
