Supplements for Avian Influenza Support in Poultry Flocks
Avian influenza (AI) poses one of the greatest disease threats to poultry production. While biosecurity and vaccination are the primary defenses, nutritional support plays a role in helping birds resist infection and recover. I’ve worked with flocks that experienced low-pathogenicity AI outbreaks and found that nutrition made a measurable difference in outcomes.
Understanding Avian Influenza
Avian influenza viruses are classified as low pathogenicity (LPAI) or high pathogenicity (HPAI). LPAI causes respiratory signs, reduced egg production, and increased mortality. HPAI causes severe systemic disease with high mortality.
Nutritional intervention is most relevant for LPAI, where birds have a chance to recover. HPAI typically requires depopulation, and nutritional support is not relevant in those cases.
Immune Support During AI Challenge
The immune response to AI infection requires significant nutritional resources:
Protein and amino acids. Antibody production requires amino acids. I maintain adequate protein and amino acid levels during AI challenge. Reducing protein to save costs during an outbreak is counterproductive.
Vitamin A. Critical for respiratory epithelial integrity and antibody production. I increase vitamin A to 20,000-25,000 IU/kg during LPAI outbreaks.
Vitamin E. At 100-150 IU/kg, vitamin E enhances antibody production and reduces tissue damage from inflammation.
Vitamin C. Reduces the stress response and supports immune function. Water supplementation at 200-300 mg/liter during outbreaks is beneficial.
Selenium. At 0.3-0.4 ppm (organic form), selenium supports antioxidant function and immune cell activity.
Zinc. At 80-120 ppm, zinc supports immune cell function and respiratory epithelial integrity.
Electrolyte Support
Respiratory distress from AI can cause acid-base imbalances. Birds that are panting or breathing heavily lose CO2 and become alkalotic. Electrolyte supplementation helps maintain normal blood pH.
I use sodium bicarbonate at 1-2 g/liter of drinking water during AI outbreaks to buffer respiratory alkalosis. Combined with electrolyte replacement, this supports respiratory function.
Stress Reduction
Stress from AI infection elevates corticosterone, which suppresses immune function. Nutritional strategies to reduce stress:
- Vitamin C at 200-300 mg/liter reduces cortisol levels
- Electrolytes maintain hydration
- Tryptophan at 0.25-0.30% of the diet supports calming neurotransmitters
- Magnesium at 0.3-0.5% supports normal nervous system function

For LPAI outbreaks, my nutritional support protocol:

Mycotoxin Management
Mycotoxins suppress immune function and increase susceptibility to AI. During AI outbreaks, mycotoxin management becomes even more important. I use mycotoxin binders at 1-2 kg/ton in all feeds during outbreaks to ensure that mycotoxins are not compounding the problem.
What NOT to Do
Some things to avoid during AI outbreaks:
- Do not use immunosuppressive drugs (corticosteroids)
- Do not drastically change the diet (adds stress)
- Do not reduce feed availability (birds need energy for immune response)
- Do not use multiple unproven supplements (can interfere with each other)
Limitations
It’s important to be realistic about what nutrition can achieve during AI outbreaks. Nutritional support:
- Can help birds maintain immune function
- Can reduce the severity of clinical signs
- Can speed recovery
- Cannot prevent infection in adequately challenged birds
- Cannot replace biosecurity
- Cannot cure highly pathogenic AI
The Role of Nutrition in Control Programs
Veterinary authorities may recommend quarantine, depopulation, or vaccination depending on the AI strain and local regulations. Nutritional support is always secondary to official control measures. Work within the regulatory framework while using nutrition to support flock health.
In LPAI outbreaks, I’ve seen well-nourished flocks recover 3-5 days faster and with 10-20% lower mortality than flocks on marginal nutrition. The difference is real but not dramatic. Nutrition supports, it doesn’t cure.
