Vitamin C for Poultry: Stress Management and Immune Support
Here is something that surprises a lot of new poultry farmers: chickens can synthesize their own vitamin C. The general assumption then is that supplementation is unnecessary. In practice, I’ve found this assumption costs producers money. The bird’s endogenous vitamin C production is sufficient under perfect conditions. But poultry farming rarely involves perfect conditions.
When Endogenous Production Falls Short
Chickens produce vitamin C in their kidneys, with baseline production estimated at 10-15 mg per kg of body weight per day. Under normal conditions, this covers their needs. But stress creates a metabolic demand that exceeds what the kidneys can supply.
Heat stress is the classic example. When ambient temperature exceeds 30°C, blood corticosterone levels rise, metabolic rate increases, and vitamin C utilization skyrockets. Birds may need 3-4 times their normal vitamin C supply during a heat wave. Their kidneys cannot keep up.
I saw this firsthand on a broiler farm in Alabama during a July heat wave. Mortality was running at 1.5% per day. We started supplementing vitamin C at 250 ppm in the drinking water. Within 48 hours, mortality dropped to under 0.3%. The farmer was skeptical about vitamin C before that. He’s been using it every summer since.
Forms of Vitamin C for Poultry
Not all vitamin C is equal in feed applications:
Ascorbic acid - The standard form. Cheap but unstable in feed, especially during pelleting. Losses can reach 50% during processing and storage.
Sodium ascorbate - More stable than ascorbic acid but less potent per gram (contains sodium as a carrier).
Calcium ascorbate - Neutral pH, more stable. I prefer this for feed applications because it doesn’t acidify the diet.
Ascorbyl-2-phosphate - The most stable form for feed. It’s a phosphate ester that resists oxidation. Costs more but you get what you pay for. This is what I use in premium supplements.
L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate - Even more stable, designed specifically for feed pelleting. Retains 90%+ activity after processing.
For drinking water administration, plain ascorbic acid works fine since it’s used immediately and doesn’t need long-term stability.
Supplementation Strategies
I use vitamin C in four main situations:
1. Heat stress. Add 200-500 ppm in water or 100-200 g/ton in feed during hot weather. Start supplementation before the heat wave hits for best results.
2. Vaccination and handling. Supplement at 300 ppm in water for 3 days before and after vaccination. Lower stress improves vaccine response.
3. Early chick life. Day-old chicks are still developing their endogenous vitamin C production. Supplementing at 100-150 ppm for the first week reduces early mortality by noticeable margins.
4. Disease recovery. During coccidiosis or respiratory outbreaks, vitamin C helps support the immune system. I use 200 ppm in water for 5-7 days.
Research Data
A meta-analysis covering 38 studies found that vitamin C supplementation in poultry reduced mortality by an average of 17% during stress periods. Egg production increased by 5-8% in layers supplemented during summer months. Feed conversion improved by 2-4 points in broilers under heat stress conditions.
One study from the University of Arkansas showed that broilers receiving 250 ppm vitamin C in water during heat stress had lower corticosterone levels, higher antibody titers after vaccination, and 12% better weight gain compared to unsupplemented controls.
Does Vitamin C in Feed Actually Work?
The stability issue makes this a legitimate question. If you’re adding standard ascorbic acid to a pelleted feed that will sit in a bin for three weeks, the actual vitamin C reaching the bird might be negligible. That’s why I prefer water supplementation for most therapeutic applications. The bird gets it immediately, and you know exactly how much it’s consuming.
For feed applications, use the stabilized forms I mentioned above. Yes, they cost more. But the alternative is paying for something that degrades before it reaches the bird.
What I Tell Farmers
I’ve had egg producers tell me they tried vitamin C and saw no difference. When I dig deeper, they were using old premises where the vitamin C had been sitting for months. Or they were using minimal doses expecting a cure-all. Vitamin C is a management tool, not a magic bullet. Used correctly during stress periods, it pays for itself many times over.
The return on investment comes from reduced mortality, improved feed conversion, and better eggshell quality during heat stress. I calculate roughly a 5:1 return on vitamin C supplementation during summer months based on reduced mortality alone.
