Guanidinoacetic Acid as a Feed Supplement for Poultry

Guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) is one of the newer feed additives in poultry nutrition that has actually delivered on its promise. It serves as a precursor to creatine, which is a key molecule in muscle energy metabolism.

What Is Guanidinoacetic Acid

GAA is the direct precursor of creatine in the body. Creatine is synthesized from arginine and glycine, but the rate-limiting step is the conversion of arginine to GAA by the enzyme arginine:glycine amidinotransferase (AGAT). The GAA is then methylated to form creatine.

Supplementing with GAA bypasses the rate-limiting AGAT step, allowing the bird to produce more creatine without being limited by the enzyme’s capacity. More creatine means more phosphocreatine in the muscle, which is the immediate energy reserve for muscle contraction.

Why GAA Works in Poultry

Poultry have relatively low natural creatine levels compared to mammals. The activity of AGAT in poultry is limiting, which means birds cannot produce enough creatine on their own to maximize growth potential.

Supplementing GAA at 600-1,000 grams per ton has been shown in multiple studies to:

  • Increase breast muscle creatine content by 30-50%
  • Improve feed conversion by 2-4 points
  • Increase breast meat yield by 2-4%
  • Improve carcass quality

A 2021 meta-analysis covering 18 studies found that GAA supplementation in broilers resulted in an average 3.1% improvement in body weight and a 2.7 point improvement in feed conversion ratio.

Field Trial Results

I participated in a large-scale broiler trial comparing GAA (800 g/ton) to a control diet. The results over three consecutive flocks, each with 50,000 birds per treatment group, were:

The breast meat yield increase was the most valuable outcome. At processing, this farm produced an additional 3.6 grams of breast meat per bird. With 150,000 birds per cycle at roughly $8/kg for breast meat, that’s about $4,300 in additional revenue per cycle.

Arginine Sparing Effect

GAA also spares arginine. Under normal conditions, some dietary arginine is used for creatine synthesis. When GAA is supplemented, more arginine is available for growth and immune function.

I’ve been able to reduce dietary arginine by 0.05-0.10% when using GAA in broiler feeds. Arginine is not typically a limiting amino acid in corn-soy diets, but in low-protein formulations or wheat-based diets, this sparing effect is relevant.

Conversely, GAA supplementation creates a higher demand for methyl groups (from methionine), which can affect the methionine requirement. When using GAA, I increase dietary methionine by 3-5% or add a methyl donor like betaine.

Inclusion Rates

The recommended inclusion rate for GAA (96-98% purity) is:

  • Broiler starter: 600-800 g/ton
  • Broiler grower: 700-900 g/ton
  • Broiler finisher: 600-800 g/ton
  • Layer feed: Not typically used, but research is emerging

I start with 800 g/ton in grower feeds where response to creatine loading is highest. Starter feeds see less response because the bird’s creatine pools are small and the growth rate is lower.

Registration Status

GAA is approved as a feed additive in the EU (for chickens for fattening), Brazil, Mexico, and several Asian countries. In the US, GAA is not currently approved by FDA for use in poultry feed, though it is approved for swine.

This regulatory landscape is slowly changing as more safety and efficacy data becomes available. For farms in approved regions, GAA is a proven tool.

Safety

GAA has been evaluated extensively for safety. The main concern is that unreacted GAA could form potentially toxic compounds. But at recommended levels (up to 1,000 g/ton), no safety concerns have been identified.

Tissue residues are not an issue because GAA is metabolized to creatine, which is already present in meat and is consumed as part of the normal diet.

Cost-Benefit

GAA at 800 g/ton costs approximately $4-6 per ton of feed. The expected response is 2-4 points of FCR improvement and 2-4% better breast meat yield. The return on investment is typically 3:1 to 5:1 depending on the value of the performance improvement in the local market.

In integration systems where breast meat yield directly impacts revenue, GAA is among the most cost-effective performance additives available.
