All-in-One Poultry Feed Supplement: Economics and Formulation

All-in-one feed supplements combine vitamins, minerals, and sometimes additional additives in a single product. They are popular in markets where feed mills have limited mixing capabilities or want to simplify their purchasing. I’ve formulated all-in-one products for several companies and have learned where they make sense.

What an All-in-One Supplement Contains

A typical all-in-one poultry supplement includes:

Advantages

The all-in-one approach offers several advantages:

Simplified purchasing. One product replaces 5-10 separate products. Less procurement time and fewer suppliers to manage.

Simplified inventory. One product to store instead of many. Less warehouse space needed.

Easier mixing. One product added at one rate. Less chance of mixing errors.

Cost savings on formulation. The manufacturer absorbs the formulation cost.

Consistent quality. One supplier is responsible for the entire supplement package.

Disadvantages

The all-in-one approach also has real disadvantages:

Less flexibility. If the flock needs more of one nutrient, you cannot adjust it without changing everything.

Higher cost per unit. All-in-one products typically carry a 10-20% premium over individual components because of the convenience factor.

Waste. If the product contains something you don’t need, you pay for it anyway.

Obsolescence. If you change your feeding program, you may be left with inventory that doesn’t fit.

Economic Analysis

Whether an all-in-one product makes economic sense depends on scale:

Small operations (under 500 tons of feed per year): All-in-one is usually more economical. The savings in labor, procurement, and inventory management exceed the premium.

Medium operations (500-5,000 tons/year): The decision depends on the complexity of the feeding program. Simple programs favor all-in-one. Complex programs (multiple phases, targeted supplements) favor individual components.

Large operations (over 5,000 tons/year): Individual components are usually more economical. The purchasing volume justifies separate sourcing, and the feed mill can handle the complexity.

Formulation Considerations

When developing an all-in-one product, the formulation must balance several factors:

Carrier selection. The carrier must be free-flowing, stable, and compatible with all ingredients. Calcium carbonate is the most common carrier.

Stability. Vitamins and other sensitive ingredients must be protected. Overages of 10-20% for sensitive vitamins are standard.

Physical properties. Particle size, density, and flowability must be consistent across all ingredients.

Target inclusion rate. The product should be added at a convenient rate: 1 kg/ton, 2.5 kg/ton, or 5 kg/ton are standard.

Market Examples

All-in-one products have different names in different markets:

  • “Poultry Premix” (common in India, Southeast Asia)
  • “Complete Supplement” (common in Africa)
  • “Base Mix” (common in some European markets)
  • “Concentrate” (common in Latin America)

The specific nutrient levels vary by market and target species.

Choosing an All-in-One Product

If you decide to use an all-in-one product, I recommend:

  1. Compare the nutrient levels to your flock’s requirements
  2. Check for unnecessary ingredients (you don’t want to pay for things you don’t need)
  3. Verify the carrier is appropriate for your feeding system
  4. Request a certificate of analysis for every batch
  5. Start with a trial batch to verify mixing and performance

All-in-one supplements are a legitimate option for many poultry operations. The choice between all-in-one and individual components should be based on economic analysis and operational needs, not on convenience alone.
