Protein is the most expensive component of poultry feed, making up 60-70% of the total feed cost. Getting protein levels right is the single biggest factor in feed economics. I spend more time optimizing protein than any other feed component.

Crude Protein vs Amino Acids

The old way of formulating poultry feeds was to target a crude protein percentage. We’ve learned that the bird doesn’t actually need crude protein. It needs specific amino acids. Crude protein is just the sum of all amino acids plus non-protein nitrogen.

Formulating on a digestible amino acid basis instead of crude protein allows me to reduce protein levels by 2-3% while maintaining performance. That saves $5-10 per ton of feed. A broiler farm feeding 5,000 tons per year saves $25,000-50,000 annually, just by switching from crude protein to amino acid formulation.

The key limiting amino acids in order for broilers are:

  1. Methionine
  2. Lysine
  3. Threonine
  4. Valine
  5. Isoleucine

For layers, the order shifts slightly:

  1. Methionine
  2. Lysine
  3. Threonine
  4. Valine
  5. Tryptophan

Protein Sources

Soybean meal (46-48% CP) is the standard protein source worldwide. It has an excellent amino acid profile and good digestibility (85-90%). The downside is that soybean meal prices fluctuate dramatically. In 2022, we saw SBM go from $350/ton to over $500/ton.

Canola meal (36-38% CP) is a lower-cost alternative with a decent amino acid profile. It contains some anti-nutritional factors but can replace 15-25% of soybean meal without performance loss. In my formulations, I include canola meal at 5-8% of the diet during periods of high soybean meal prices.

DDGS (Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles, 27-30% CP) is a corn co-product that is available in high-ethanol-production regions. The amino acid digestibility is lower than soybean meal (65-75%), and the phosphorus is highly available but high levels cause litter moisture issues. I limit DDGS to 8-10% of the diet for broilers and 10-15% for layers.

Fish meal (60-65% CP) is the highest-quality protein source with an almost perfect amino acid profile. It’s expensive ($1,200-1,800/ton) and typically used in starter feeds at 1-3% of the diet. Its main value is the high methionine and lysine content.

Meat and bone meal (45-50% CP) is a rendering product with variable quality. I’ve tested samples ranging from 35% to 55% protein. When the quality is consistent, it can replace 3-5% of soybean meal. But quality control is critical. I require a minimum of 50% CP and a maximum of 10% ash for any MBM I use.

Synthetic amino acids are used to fill the gaps. L-lysine HCl (78% lysine), DL-methionine (99% methionine), L-threonine (98% threonine), and L-valine (96% valine) are all cost-effective ways to raise amino acid levels without increasing crude protein.

Low-Protein Diet Strategies

There is a trend toward low-protein diets supplemented with synthetic amino acids. The advantages are:

  • Lower feed cost (less soybean meal, more corn)
  • Reduced nitrogen excretion (25-35% less ammonia emissions)
  • Better litter quality (less moisture from lower uric acid production)
  • Improved gut health (less undigested protein reaching the hindgut)

I’ve successfully reduced crude protein from 21% to 18% in broiler grower feeds using supplemental methionine, lysine, threonine, and valine. The FCR was 1.72 on the low-protein diet versus 1.70 on the standard diet, not significantly different. Litter nitrogen content was 32% lower on the low-protein diet.

The practical limit for protein reduction is about 3 percentage points below standard levels. Below that, even with synthetic amino acids, growth performance drops off. Research suggests that a minimum of 16% CP in broiler finisher feeds is needed for optimal growth.

Protein Quality Evaluation

I use two main metrics to evaluate protein quality:

Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score compares the digestible amino acid profile of a protein source to the bird’s requirement. A score of 1.0 means the protein perfectly matches the bird’s needs. Soybean meal scores about 0.90, while canola meal scores about 0.65.

Protein Efficiency Ratio is the grams of weight gain per gram of protein consumed. In broiler starters, a good PER is 2.5-3.0. Below 2.0 suggests excess protein or poor amino acid balance.
