Methionine Supplementation in Poultry Feed: The First Limiting Amino Acid
Methionine is the single most important amino acid in practical poultry feeding. It’s the first limiting amino acid in typical corn-soy diets, meaning it runs out before any other essential amino acid. I’ve spent more time optimizing methionine levels in formulations than on any other nutrient.
Why Methionine Matters
Methionine is not just a building block for protein. It’s also the precursor for cysteine (another essential amino acid for feather formation), a methyl donor for methylation reactions, and a precursor for polyamines that regulate cell growth.
The bird uses methionine for three main purposes in order of priority:
- Protein synthesis (muscle, organs, egg white)
- Feather keratin synthesis (feathers are about 15% methionine + cysteine)
- Metabolic functions (methylation, polyamines)
When methionine is deficient, muscle growth suffers first because the bird prioritizes feathering and metabolic functions. That’s why marginal methionine deficiency in broilers shows up as poor breast meat yield before any other symptom.
The Hot Topic: DL-Methionine vs L-Methionine vs MHA
There has been a long-running debate about which methionine source is best:
- DL-Methionine (99% pure) is the industry standard. It contains both the D and L isomers. The bird can convert the D isomer to the L form through enzyme activity.
- L-Methionine (the natural form) is more directly utilized but costs significantly more. Its use is limited to specialty applications.
- Methionine Hydroxy Analog (MHA) is a liquid or dry alternative that’s about 88% as active as DL-methionine on a weight basis. It’s converted to L-methionine in the body through a different pathway.
In my formulations, I use DL-methionine as the standard. The hydroxy analog has some advantages in pelleted feeds (better mixing characteristics), but I account for the lower activity by multiplying the inclusion rate by 1.14 (since MHA is approximately 88% as active as DL-methionine on a molar basis).
Practical Levels
For broilers, total methionine levels in the feed should be:
- Starter (0-10 days): 0.50-0.55% (with total sulfur amino acids at 0.90-0.95%)
- Grower (11-24 days): 0.45-0.50% (TSAA: 0.85-0.90%)
- Finisher (25-42 days): 0.38-0.42% (TSAA: 0.75-0.80%)
For layers:
- Peak production: 0.38-0.42% methionine (TSAA: 0.70-0.75%)
- Mid to late lay: 0.33-0.38% methionine (TSAA: 0.65-0.70%)
I adjust these numbers based on feed intake. In hot weather when intake drops by 10%, I increase the concentration by 10% to maintain daily intake.
Economics of Methionine Supplementation
Methionine is one of the more expensive feed additives, typically costing $3-5 per kg depending on the market. At typical inclusion rates of 1-2 kg per ton, the cost adds $3-10 per ton of feed. But the response is dramatic. A 1-ton batch of broiler feed without supplemental methionine would produce birds with 15-20% poorer feed conversion.
The return on investment is typically 5:1 or better. Every dollar spent on methionine returns at least $5 in improved growth and feed efficiency.
Cysteine and Total Sulfur Amino Acids
Methionine and cysteine are often considered together as total sulfur amino acids (TSAA). Cysteine can spare up to 50% of the methionine requirement because the bird uses methionine to synthesize cysteine. In practical terms, I keep cysteine at 45-50% of TSAA. Going above 55% cysteine starts to limit growth because the conversion becomes inefficient.
For synthetic feeds with very low natural sulfur amino acids (like purified diets), I keep the methionine:cysteine ratio at roughly 55:45.
Clinical Signs of Deficiency
In the field, methionine deficiency shows up as:
- Poor feathering (feathers are thin and the birds look partially bald)
- Reduced breast meat yield
- Increased feather pecking and cannibalism
- Poor egg size in layers
- Fatty liver (since methionine is needed for fat transport)
The feathering symptom is the one I use as a quick field assessment. If a flock looks thin-feathered at 14-21 days, methionine is the first thing I check in the formulation.
Bottom Line
Getting methionine right is the difference between a good feed conversion ratio and a great one. It’s one area where saving money by reducing fortification levels usually backfires. The bird’s growth will suffer, and the cost of the reduced gain will far exceed the savings on the additive.
