B Vitamins in Poultry Feed: The Metabolic Powerhouses
The B vitamin complex includes eight water-soluble vitamins that function primarily as enzyme cofactors in energy metabolism. In my experience, B vitamin deficiencies in poultry are rarely dramatic and obvious. They show up as vague signs: poor growth, reduced feed efficiency, leg weakness, feathering problems. The kind of symptoms that get misattributed to anything else.
The Key B Vitamins
Biotin is crucial for feather development and footpad health. I’ve seen flocks with severe biotin deficiency where the birds were practically bald on the breast, with cracked foot pads. The classic recommendation is 100-200 mcg/kg feed for broilers. But in my experience, modern fast-growing birds need 250-300 mcg/kg, especially when fed wheat-based diets (wheat has lower biotin availability than corn).
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is the only B vitamin stored in any quantity in the body. It’s involved in methyl transfer reactions and works closely with folic acid. Poultry diets almost always need supplemental B12 because the natural levels in plant ingredients are negligible. I typically use 10-20 mcg/kg in broiler feeds and 25-30 mcg/kg in breeder feeds.
Folic acid is critical for cell division and growth. The requirement increases significantly during periods of rapid growth and egg production. I’ve formulated starter feeds with 2 mg/kg folic acid and had hatcheries report better early growth and reduced mortality.
Niacin (B3) deserves its own discussion, but I’ll mention here that it’s especially important for leg development and feathering. Turkeys have a much higher niacin requirement than chickens, and deficiency causes bowed legs and enlarged hocks.
Riboflavin (B2) deficiency shows up as curled toe paralysis, where the chicks toes curl inward and they walk on their hocks. It’s a classic sign that is almost pathognomonic for riboflavin deficiency.
Thiamine (B1) deficiency is less common but causes polyneuritis, where the bird’s head retracts backward in a star-gazing position.
Pyridoxine (B6) is involved in amino acid metabolism. High-protein diets increase B6 requirements. I’ve seen B6 deficiency show up as poor growth and convulsive seizures in young chicks.
Interactions and Antagonists
Several factors increase B vitamin requirements in practical poultry feeding:
Coccidiosis. Any gut infection increases B vitamin needs because the damaged intestinal lining cannot absorb nutrients normally. During a coccidiosis outbreak, I double the B vitamin fortification.
Antibiotics. Some antibiotics, particularly sulfonamides and tetracyclines, interfere with B vitamin synthesis in the gut. If birds are on these medications, supplemental B vitamins help reduce growth depression.
Mycotoxins. Several mycotoxins, including aflatoxin, reduce the liver’s ability to activate B vitamins into their coenzyme forms.
High-energy diets. Because B vitamins are involved in energy metabolism, high-energy feeds increase the metabolic demand.
