I’ve been in the poultry industry long enough to remember when a simple corn-soy diet was considered adequate nutrition. Those days are gone. Modern poultry strains have been selected for such rapid growth and high egg production that their nutritional requirements exceed what basic feed ingredients can provide. This isn’t a sales pitch — it’s biological reality.

What Standard Feed Provides

A standard poultry feed formulation is built around meeting the bird’s requirements for energy, protein, amino acids, calcium, and phosphorus. These are the macronutrients and major minerals that support basic metabolic functions.

What standard feed often falls short on:

  • Trace minerals: Zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium levels in natural ingredients are variable and often insufficient
  • Vitamins: Many vitamins degrade during feed storage, especially in hot conditions
  • Bioavailable nutrients: Plant-based ingredients contain anti-nutritional factors that reduce nutrient availability
  • Gut health support: Standard feed does not contain compounds that actively support digestive health

The gap between what basic feed provides and what birds need has widened as genetic potential has improved.

The Gap Between Genetics and Nutrition

A broiler in 1950 reached 2 kg in about 12 weeks. Today’s broiler reaches the same weight in less than 5 weeks. A layer in 1950 produced about 150 eggs per year. Modern layers produce over 300.

These genetic improvements have changed nutritional requirements dramatically. A modern broiler needs more bioavailable calcium and phosphorus for rapid skeletal development. A modern layer needs more trace minerals for consistent eggshell quality. Neither can fully meet these needs from a simple corn-soy diet.

I’ve formulated feeds for operations that thought they were providing complete nutrition. When we added targeted supplementation, mortality dropped by 1-2%, egg production increased by 3-5%, and feed conversion improved. The birds needed more than the basic feed was providing.

Conditions That Increase Nutritional Requirements

Feed storage: Vitamin potency declines during storage. Feed stored for more than 2 weeks may have significantly lower vitamin levels than formulated.

These variable requirements are why a fixed feed formulation is never optimal for all situations.

Every supplement costs money. The question is whether it pays for itself. In my experience across dozens of operations, targeted supplementation consistently provides positive returns.

A few examples from my records:

  • A layer operation adding 0.5 kg/ton of a trace mineral premix improved eggshell breaking strength by 15%, reducing cracked egg losses from 8% to 5%. At $0.15 per dozen, this saved $4,500 per 10,000 hens per year.

  • Delivery form: The supplement must survive feed processing and reach the right part of the bird’s digestive tract
  • Technical support: Good suppliers provide guidance on usage and expected results

Practical Starting Points

For operations new to supplementation, I recommend starting with the areas that have the highest ROI:

  1. A good trace mineral premix replaces generic sources with bioavailable forms
  2. A probiotic supports gut health and immune function
  3. An electrolyte supplement for stress periods
  4. An enzyme product to improve feed efficiency

These four products cover the most common nutritional gaps and typically return 3-5 times their cost.
